University graduates holding a non-German bachelor degree are welcome to apply to our master program. Please note the special regulations and prerequisites that apply for this case.

Study Programs & Curriculum

Currently, we are offering two master programs in English language: Embedded Computing Systems (ESY) and Automation and Control (A&C).

Embedded Computing Systems (ESY)

Embedded Computing Systems are the technological backbone of our digitalized world. Choose our program Embedded Computing Systems (ESY) if you want to become an expert in embedded system design. 

ESY is the TUK component of the prestigious EU-funded Erasmus Mundus Program European Master in Embedded Computing Systems (EMECS).

Automation and Control (A&C)

Automation and Control (A&C) deals with steering and controlling of complex systems such as production lines, distributed grids, or on-chip / on-board architectures. Safety and security are two fundamental design paradigms for this discipline.

During your master studies here at TUK, you will gain deep knowledge in the areas of control theory, modeling and identification, development of safe and secure systems, and mechatronic systems. Also for A&C you can select from a wide range of elective courses.

Automation and Control (A&C) is one of the most important technology drivers of the industrialized society, today and for the future. It forms the safe and efficient technical basis for industrial production, for the operation of infrastructural systems and for our daily lives.

The core competence of automation and control is the theory of control engineering. Based on the basic knowledge of linear and discrete-time systems, the master's program focuses on advanced methods for nonlinear and adaptive control, optimization-based control, robust and fault-tolerant control, and methods for modeling and identifying dynamic systems. Courses on the associated sensors, actuators and signal processing are also part of the study program.

Programmable digital controllers form the fundamental basis of automated systems that play a prominent technical role in the age of Industry 4.0. In the master's program, analysis and design methods as well as embedded hardware and software components for such programmable logic systems are taught and deepened in practical laboratory experiments.

Autonomous robotics, networked systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), learning algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) are just a few terms for the next generation of connected automation. Principles and design methods of these diverse technologies are also studied, e.g. in the form of elective modules, and experienced in practical use (laboratory or study projects).

Great freedom of choice and intensive advice: 

A comparatively large proportion of the curriculum can be individually customized with the help of a study model consultation. Thus, the personal affection and strength can be taken into account to a high degree. Subjects from other disciplines (e.g. computer science or mechanical engineering) can also be included in the study program.

Learning by Doing in an uncrowded study environment:

During your study, individually definable study projects in small groups and covering a variable amount of curriculum will help you to actively implement what has been learned and thus to better understand larger contexts – a great advantage of a medium-sized university. The university has many collaborative projects with industrial partners in Germany and Europe, provides possibilities for getting involved in those practical research projects.

Strong research surroundings for digital transformation:

The TU Kaiserslautern (TUK) offers an ideal place for an Automation and Control study with a special education profile in digital technologies. Not only the embedded systems area of our Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is a top address in Germany, but the entire Kaiserslautern research cluster is one of the main hubs in Germany for IT and embedded systems technology and a center of innovation with the well-known institutions Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE), Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM), German Research Center in Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), and Max-Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI). During your studies, you will be able to closely cooperate with affiliated companies and research centers.

Automation and Control (A&C) is a four semester master program with a total of 120 ECTS CPs.

It consists of a core part and an elective part of courses. You can chose from two majors:

  • Real-Time Control Systems (RCS)
  • Connected Automation Systems (CAS)

In the elective part, you can select from:

    • A wide range of modules from the EIT department,

    • Subject-related modules from other TUK departments, and

    • Individual projects, carried out either at a TUK chair or in industry.

At the beginning of each semester, we give an introduction session where we present the generic regulations and give further information about the recommended structure and organization of your studies. The date will be announced at the beginning of the semester.

Prerequisites & Application

All master applicants with non-German bachelor degrees need to submit their applications to the central Department of International Affairs: ISGS. The ISGS is in charge of processing your application and will give support whenever you have any questions or issues.

The formal prerequisite for our master programs is a bachelor degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related area. The bachelor cumulative grade point average (CGPA) shall be at least 3.5 out of 4 (or equivalent).

Important: The master program for foreign applicants is not restricted. However, we check your subject-specific entry requirements and also may impose conditions. Thus, submitting your application does not yet mean that you can enroll.

Checklist for Application Documents

  1. A letter of motivation (letter of intent)
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Bachelor/Master degree certificate (diploma) and transcripts of records
  4. Degree certificate and transcript translations (German or English)
  5. Short description of the subjects covered during previous studies (for example a syllabus)
  6. Two recommendation letters from faculty staff or industry manager - can be sent also via e-mail (containing your application number!)
  7. Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL 213/550/80 or IELTS 6.0 or equivalent)
  8. APS (for applicants from the People’s Republic of China & Vietnam)
