Basics of Electrical Power Engineering

The lecture consists of two parts, each covering ½ semester:

Part I: Energy Generation

Part II: Basics of Electromagnetic Energy Conversion and Drive Technology

The ES + EM chair is responsible for the first part of the lecture; the second part is offered by the MEAS chair.

Part II: Basics of Electromagnetic Energy Conversion and Drive Technology

The aim of this lecture is to convey knowledge in the following areas:

  • Fundamentals of electrical engineering required for the description of electromagnetic energy conversion
  • Alternatives for generating electrical energy
  • Grid architecture for the transmission and distribution of electrical energy
  • Modelling technical transformers and describing their operating behaviour
  • Architecture of electrical drive systems
  • Modelling the most important electrical machine types and describing their elementary stationary operating behaviour in the drive system

The following content is presented:

  • Overview of generation, transmission, distribution, and use of electrical energy
  • Principles for the description of electromagnetic energy conversion
  • Architectures of electric drive systems
  • Fundamentals of DC machines, DC drive technology, transformers for alternating and three-phase current
  • General characteristics of induction machines
  • Fundamentals of three-phase asynchronous machines
  • AC drive technology with three-phase asynchronous machines
  • Fundamentals of three-phase synchronous machines
  • Alternatives for generating electrical energy
  • Fundamentals of transmission and distribution of electrical energy
