Electrical Drive Technology I / Electrical Drive Systems for Mechanical Engineers

The aim of this lecture is to convey knowledge in the following areas:

  • Most important functional groups of electrical drive systems
  • Describing the movement process of a drive in time
  • Project planning for electric drives based on the operating mode or load cycle
  • Power electronic circuit technology for DC and AC drives
  • Modelling of conventional drives with direct current and three-phase asynchronous machines as well as describing of the stationary operating behaviour
  • Modelling of converter-fed drives with direct current and three-phase asynchronous machines as well as describing of the stationary operating behaviour
  • Circuit technology for DC and AC drives with regard to starting, speed setting/speed control and braking

The following content is presented:

  • Development of electrical drive technology
  • Recent development trends
  • Functional groups of electrical drive systems
  • Stationary description of working machines
  • Operating modes according to DIN EN 60034-1
  • Fundamentals of drive configuration
  • Three-phase transformers in drive systems
  • Conventional DC drives
  • DC converter drives
  • Fundamental field conditions and behaviour of the three-phase asynchronous machine with squirrel-cage and slip-ring rotor
  • Conventional AC drives with three-phase asynchronous machines
  • AC inverter-fed drives with three-phase asynchronous machines
