Development and Implementation of Intelligent Information Processing Techniques for Applications in the Domain of Psychoacoustics

Development and adaptation of methods from statistical pattern recognition, neural networks, and soft computing for the application in the domain of psychoacoustics and sound engineering.

Abstract:
This project targets on the exploitation of methods from statistical pattern recognition, neural networks, and soft computing in the domain of psychoacoustics and sound engineering. In cooperation with our industrial partner suitable methods are investigated and evaluated with real application data from the domain of sound engineering. The main focus of this research work is on data analysis and the application of multivariate data projection methods and interactive data visualisation and exploratory analysis.

The acoustic navigator is a novel tool that exploits dimensionality reducing with advanced visualisation tools for an optimum integration of the human analyst in the analysis process. Combined visualisation and auralisation features allow to exploit the remarkable human perceiptive and associative capabilities.

The acoustic navigator implementation is based on PC MS-Windows 98/NT and allows the interactive hierarchical analysis of psychoacoustic databases for sound engineering applications. Current research focuses on enhancements for interactive sound synthesis and refinement based on the acoustic navigator.

The acoustic navigator in 1999 was integrated in the commercial Psychoacoustic Test and Analysis System PATS of Synotec GmbH. Other tasks, as e.g. medical or finance data analysis are well within the scope of this novel tool.
